I don’t write this newsletter anymore.

And we don’t usually send updates on Thursdays.

But I feel frustrated and I need to share this with you.

And if you want a graduate scheme one day you should read it.

If not, you can delete this email.

What you get told:

🔺 Go to 6th form or college and get good grades.

🔺 Then to University and you’ll get on a Graduate scheme.

🔺 Don’t worry about the debt it will be worth it for your career.

What they don’t tell you:

▪️Around 800,000 students graduate each year.

▪️Only roughly 20,000 graduate schemes are offered each year.

▪️ Many of those grad schemes are filled by people who did internships or placements with that company or know someone who works there

Without thinking about the 3rd point that’s 40 to 1. Or 2.5%.

Since 2020 13% of UK grads are still unemployed.

Only 28% work in their field of study.

I’ve not mentioned any of this before because I didn’t want to scare you.

But I hear from so many of you who fail to reach your goal and then take it personally.

I’ve realised the problem is:

🔸 You don’t know where the bar is…

🔸 You don’t know that you need to be in the top 2.5%

🔸 You don’t see the hours others spend on research, attending events, networking and interview and assessment centre prep.

🔸 You don’t know that some students come to interviews with extra work projects they’ve done to show off to the employer.

🔸 You don’t know that before my BT assessment centre I asked a friend of a friend who had already done it the month before what I could expect (never shared that publicly before)

I’ve not mentioned this before because I know that young people from black and ethnically diverse backgrounds as well as female candidates often feel put off applying for roles because they don’t feel they’ll be successful.

But I’ve been setting you up for disappointment.

And to succeed you need take every possible advantage you can.

We have several in-person and virtual events coming up over the coming weeks.

And I started thinking “why do we have to try so hard to get you to come to them?”

And I realised it’s because you don’t know where the bar is.

You don’t realise putting the work in to get a role is as important if not more important than your degree.

And that Sept and Oct are the most important months for internships, placements and grad schemes.

In sporting terms this period is your Olympics, Superbowl, Wimbledon, World Cup and NBA finals all rolled up into one.
